my name is leah, but i am not mama leah mama leah is a new york jewish woman who has a restaurant and a cookbook, i believe. cold beet borscht is a staple of eastern european jewish food. all recipes vary, each offering a little something different. this one is served cold with a hot potato in it. truly meatless for those vegetarian folks.. the unique blend of hot and cold is something different, that i enjoy. also splendid on a hot day. (came from mama leah's jewish kitchen hint: wear old clothes or an apron when preparing beets! they stain!

💬 Reviews (Simply delicious tartlette. Just delicious, I never changed a thing. I'm so glad that I tried this dish. It is the best meatpie of its type that we have ever tried. They were shared with our neighbors....two of them came looking for more, that's how special these babies are. So tasty and savory, I loved the combination of mashed potatoes, beef, onions and tomatoes in the puff pastry. I used herbs de provence to flavor the pies. preheat oven to 375 degrees', 'season chicken breasts with salt and black pepper to taste and place on a baking sheet', 'bake for 15 to 20 minutes', 'remove from oven and cool', 'when cool enough to handle , dice the meat and set aside until needed', 'while the chicken breasts are baking , heat the oil in a large stockpot over medium heat', 'add the butter and melt', 'saute the onions and celery until the onions are translucent , about 6 to 7 minutes', 'add the garlic , tarragon , oregano , paprika and remaining 2 teaspoons salt and 1 / 2 teaspoon black pepper', 'cook , stirring , for 3 or 4 minutes', 'add the flour and stir until well-combined', 'slowly whisk in the chicken broth and bring to a boil', 'add the tomatoes and cream', 'reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes', 'add the reserved chicken breast and simmer 10 minutes more', 'just before serving , stir in the spinach'

i don't know what saint at elephant's deli decided to share the recipe for this soup, but they go on my list of people to be grateful for. i've lightened it up a bit, but the flavor's still teriffic. this is one of my favorites!

💬 Reviews (My family loved these. I made them into turnovers. I did not have puff pastries so I made a pie crust. It's a lot of work to do the pie crust but the result was very good. Everyone took some for lunch today and they were all happy. Thank you. Next time I will use the pastries to save myself a lot of time.)

put all ingredients in a large pot', 'stir well and bring to a boil', 'continue to stir occasionally until it boils , so the cinnamon is incorporated', 'reduce to a simmer and cook for three to four hours', 'continue to stir occasionally', 'you can speed up this step , if you leave it on a boil , but i think the flavour improves if it is not rushed', 'the sauce needs to cook until it bloopsnamely until the sauce splashes out of the pot and makes a bit of a mess on the stove top', 'remove and discard the chillies and bay leaves', 'what to do next if you intend to serve this sauce over pasta', 'saute the beef until it loses most of its pink colouring , then add the onions and saute until tender', 'drain off any fat', 'add meat mixture to cooked sauce and stir well', 'heat the mixture well , then ladle over pasta'

i grew up across the street from a real mama leone—an amazing irish woman who had an italian husband and a live-in italian mother-in-law who taught her to cook. this awesome recipe was a neighbourhood favourite. it has been equally popular with everyone who has ever tasted it. it is an all-purpose italian sauce. i usually make it for spaghetti and have added optional instructions for that purpose. without the meat, it is vegan friendly. it's also a good pizza sauce base. you can add other herbs, spices and vegetables if you like, but we have always kept it simple. that's why once it was a lifesaver for a friend who is allergic to garlic. the sauce freezes extremely well.

    white bread', 'frozen chopped broccoli', 'cheddar cheese', 'eggs', 'milk', 'butter', 'sugar', 'salt and pepper'

preheat oven to 350f degrees', 'butter a 9x13 glass pyrex dish', 'tear the bread slices into bite size pieces and cover the bottom of the pan', 'layer the chopped broccoli on top of the bread slices', 'in a large bowl , combine the remaining ingredients and pour over the broccoli and bread , making sure all the bread pieces get a good soaking and that the cheese is distributed evenly', 'cover with tin foil and bake for 35-40 minutes or until casserole is golden brown and set', 'let rest 10 minutes and cut into squares and serve'

i got this recipe years ago from a jane and michael stern cookbook that featured recipes from restaurants around the country. the original recipe was for a smaller casserole and i doubled the recipe. we have it at every holiday meal. mama lu's is a southern restaurant that is located in florida i believe (not sure of the city). i like this recipe because it's not like every other broccoli casserole.

💬 Reviews (These were really good! However, I did make some tweaks. I used ground turkey, just to lighten it up a bit. I added cinnamon to the spice blend, which really perked up the flavor a lot. I found the mixture to be really soupy, so I ended up draining off a lot of the liquid. I would use considerably less broth than written here and probably would drain the tomatoes before adding them. I used refrigerator biscuits instead of puff pastry - they were the perfect size rolled out, and a lot more economical than puff pastry. They were a hit at my party last night!)
