i'm german/american and sauerkraut was a must in our house. growing up in germany for 23 years we had it often and in many different varieties. many times mom made it just with hamhogs or smoked pigs feet.
💬 Reviews (Mmmmmm! We *loved* these! I reduced the butter to 1/4 cup, as someone else had suggested, and put in raisins, currants, and cut up dried apricots. I watched the machine as it was mixing, and did add more flour. Not sure how much more. I cut the crosses in quite deeply, and could see them when they came out of the oven. brown the meat and onion in a pot with lid', 'add the paprika to the meat and onion mix , stir to mix in', 'put in the drained sauerkraut , crushed tomatos , bay leaves water and sugar', 'stir to mix it up and then cover the pot', 'cook slowly for about one hour , or until meat is tender', 'add the sour cream and stir', 'add salt & pepper to taste', 'serve in soup plates , with good crusty bread'

the aroma of this will make your mouth water! this freezes well, so i double it sometimes.

i trim some of the fat from the short ribs', 'there is plenty marbled throughout to keep these moist', 'brown ribs in a dutch oven in hot oil', 'remove ribs and saut onions until softened but not brown', 'return ribs to pot', 'blend tomato sauce , 1 cup water , brown sugar , vinegar , salt , mustard , and worcestershire', 'pour over ribs', 'bring to boil , reduce heat to simmer , and cook 2 to 2 1 / 2 hours or until meat is tender', 'skim off fat', 'stir in noodles and additional 1 cup water', 'cover and cook , stirring occasionally , for 15 to 20 minutes until noodles are tender'

tender, falling apart beef ribs in a tangy sauce reminiscent of slow cooked barbecue. i've also made this with country style pork ribs (very, very good). the original recipe calls for cooking the noodles in the sauce, but i like to use a hearty noodle like bowties or kluski and cook separately, then mix in before serving.
💬 Reviews (These buns were the best!! The dough turns out the softest baked buns. I followed the ingredients as written. I changed a few things baking them though after looking on the bbc food website. I baked the buns at 475F for 9 minutes. Before baking I made a flour paste from 2 TBS flour and 2 TBS water. Mixed it in a baggie and piped it in the cut crosses. This turned out more authentic to the buns I ate whilst in England. After baking I brush them with sugar glaze. I think this is some of the best homemade bread I have ever made!)

hearty wholewheat spatzle is delicious with a hungarian dish called rakott kaposzta (separate posting) and cucumber salad (also separate posting). i like the pinch of nutmeg. spatzle is served in lieu of pasta, dumplings, rice or potatoes. you may want to adjust the flour egg ratio, you can tell when you are pushing the spatzle through the colinder. of course if you have a spatzle maker all the better but the colinder works. there are many different recipes for spatzel. some use white flour, some have no milk and what you serve it with is up to you.
💬 Reviews (These were good, but a little heavy. I did add another handful of flour to the breadmaker when I added the fruit because the dough was too wet. I wanted to make authentic hot cross buns for Easter, and I think I'll keep looking for the right recipe.)
